We have selected several cDNA clones of soybean seed maturation proteins. These are designated GmPM clones, denoting for Glycine max physiologically mature. These proteins are also know as LEA proteins. Six of them belong to the group 3 LEA proteins. Like all this kind of proteins, there are tandemly-repeating 11-mers. The longest one consist of 32 11-mers and the shortest one consist of 5 11-mers. These proteins are highly hydrophilic, contain large amounts of charged residues, i.e. D, E, K and R, and small residues, i.e. A and G, and contain no C or W residues. pGmPM2 or pGmPM8 has been expressed in transgenic plants and their biological functions are studied. We get one of these proteins crystallized and the structure study is on the way.
