The moss genus Glyphomitrium is considered in Europe and America as part of Ptychomitriaceae, close to Grimmiaceae. In Japan it is placed in Erpodiaceae. Focusing on characters of presumed taxonomic importance, TEM and SEM observations have been obtained for two species of Glyphomitrium. In addition, both published information and new research on some species of Erpodiaceae, Ptychomitriaceae and Grimmiaceae have been used for a comparative study. The results, in particular the distinctive morphology of the foot and the different peristome constitution, support the seggregation of Glyphomitrium from all the mentioned familes.
