THE ROLE OF HERBARIA IN SIBERAN BOTANICAL GARDENS

I.Krasnoborov. Central Siberian Botanical Garden, Novosibirsk, Russia

The only botanical garden in Siberia with a Herbarium is the Central Siberian Botanical Garden with 400,000 specimens. The Herbarium is annually replenished with new specimens collected by the staff members during field trips and received through exchange programmes. The staff members study the flora of Siberia. Floras and plant manuals are published. Regional Red Data Books are compiled. All Herbarium researchers are taxonomy experts. They arrange field trips to various regions of Siberia in which botanists from the USA, Japan, Finland, France take part. There is a research group engaged in the study of the problem of the species. They work at the Siberian species of Pulsatilla and Dendranthema (Compositae). Taxonomic problems are solved with different methods, chemotaxonomy and DNA-analysis among them (the genera Senecio and some others) in collaboration with other research institutions.
