A phylogenetic study of the genus Aulacomnium (Bryopsida, Aulacomniaceae) using evidence from morphology and gene sequences

Terry J. O'Brien, University Herbarium, University of California, Berkeley

The genus Aulacomnium , of the monotypic family Aulacomniaceae, includes five species that differ substantially in their reproductive strategies and their ecological distributions. I reconstructed the species phylogeny in Aulacomnium from a combined data set of both morphological characters from herbarium specimens and molecular characters from chloroplast and nuclear genes. This study also reveals the higher level phylogeny of Aulacomnium and its closest extant relatives, which have been suggested to include genera of the Bartramiaceae, Catoscopiaceae, Meesiaceae, Rhizogoniaceae and Timmiaceae. A well-supported phylogeny for Aulacomnium and its nearest relatives is a step towards reconstructing the evolution of life history traits in relation to habitat selection among the species.
