SPRINGFIELD CENTRE FOR ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION, RESEARCH AND EDUCATION (SCEPTRE) IN DOMINICA, W.I.

Allan P. Drew, State University of New York, College of Environmental Science and Forestry, Syracuse, New York

Located on the island of Dominica, W.I. at an elevation of 1200 ft. in the rain forest life zone, the Springfield Centre for Environmental Protection, Research and Education (SCEPTRE) serves the needs of tropical biologists interested in sites for short term research, short courses or longer term field study. The Centre supports education, research in natural resources and the environment, organic farming and agroforestry demonstrations and is a wildlife sanctuary. SUNY-ESF has taught Tropical Ecology to graduate and undergraduate students at SCEPTRE since 1991, using Springfield as a base for island-wide studies in rain forest, dry forest and montane ecosystems.
