Held only once every six years, the International Botanical Congress last met in the United States in 1969, when it was convened in Seattle, Washington. To be held in St. Louis, Missouri, August 1 to 7, 1999, the XVI International Botanical Congress offers a unique opportunity to meet and interview world-renowned researchers on their latest findings from dozens of scientific disciplines, including botany, ecology, mycology, horticulture, agriculture, and related fields.

"We are greatly reducing the opportunity for our children and grandchildren to benefit from the amazing properties that plants provide for us—from developing renewable building materials to repairing devastated soils to controlling emerging viruses."
                   — Professor Sir Ghillean Prance, F.R.S., Director, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew
