Taxonomic notes

Syn: P. insularis var. yunnanensis (Franch.) Silba 1984; P. yunnanensis var. tenuifolia Cheng & Law 1975; P. insularis var. tenuifolia (Cheng & Law) Silba 1990 (1); P. tabulaeformis var. yunnanensis (Franchet) Shaw (2). Closely related species in subsection Pinus include: P. tabuliformis (adjunct range to N), P. kesiya (adjunct range to S) (3), and (via cpDNA data) P. hwangshanensis, P. taiwanensis and P. thunbergii (4).

Can grow to the exceptional length of 35 cm in one season.
Leaves: In fascicles of 2-3, 15-20(30) cm long.
Cones: 3-7[10] cm long, light brown, situated laterally in groups of 2-5, erect on short peduncles, opening in the second summer of growth.
Cone scales: Purplish-brown on the inside. Apophysis keeled, ending in a short prickle on the umbo (2). Pollen cones:

Range

China: predominantly at 600-3000 m elevation on the high plateaus of Yunnan (1), but extending N into Sichuan, where it intergrades with P. tabuliformis, and S into N Burma, where it intergrades with P. kesiya. In recent times it has extended its range as competing broadleaf forests are logged (1, 2, 3).
