Two varieties, the type (syn: P. mukdensis Nakai 1919; P. tabuliformis var. mukdensis (Nakai) Uyeki 1925) and henryi (Masters) Kuan 1983 (syn: P. henryi Masters 1902; P. massoniana var. henryi (Mast.) Wu 1956; P. massoniana var. wulingensis Qi & Lin 1988) (2). P. densata has been called a variety of this species (1).Description

Observations
A rare old-growth forest can be seen on the heights of Wudang Shan in northern Hubei (ca. 32° 28' N, 111° 8' E), where it grows as a forest dominant along with Quercus aliena (3).Remarks
