Two subspecies (1):

"Ssp. major ( = E. nebrodensis Tines; E. scoparia Lange) - an erect shrub. Shoots pubescent, heartwood red-brown, seeds ovate. Occurs in the western and central Mediterranean region.

"Ssp. procera (= E. procera Fisch. et. C.A. Mey.; E. nebrodensis var. procera (Fisch. et Mey.) Stapf.) - shoots glabrous; heartwood red-brown; seeds ovate to oblong. Occurs in the mountains of Southern Greece."

Description

"A shrub up to 2 m in height. Leaves up to 3 mm long, leathery. Male inflorescences without stalk, globose; female flowers solitary, petiolated, usually with 2 pairs of bracts. Fruit 5-7 mm long, red or yellow" (1).
