Syn: Juniperus sargentii Henry.

Description

Dioecious evergreen shrub with dense crown, horizontal trunk and upright shoots. Leaves scale- or needle-like, dark blue-green, rounded, diamond-shaped or oval, to 1.5 cm, with dark glands. Young leaves pointed, cylindrical, to 1 cm long. Cones (berries) fleshy, rounded, each with 2-3 triangular seeds. Pollination in July, seeds mature October-November of the next year (1).

Range

Common in Japan, rare in Russia (Sakhalin and South Kurile Islands) (1). Also said to occur in China and Korea (2).
