Description
"A prostate plant or a small broadly conical shrub 1.8-4.5 m. tall. Branchlets finely divided, twisted into long branchlets. Juvenile leaves light silvery-green, 8-15 mm. long, needle-like, persistent. Adult leaves scalelike, in whorls of 3, 1.5-2 mm. long, not grooved above, bluntly acute, sometimes with scarce resin. Male cone globose to oblong, on a peduncle 4 mm. long, cone 3.5-5 mm. long by 4 mm. wide, with 20 acuminate scales with a dorsal crest. Female cone acuminate, globose, narrowing abruptly at the apex, often subtended at the base by juvenile leaves to 1 cm. long, cone to 1.5 cm. long, with 6 scales which are somewhat outcurved at the apex, yellowish-brown to glaucous-brown. Seeds variable, dark brown, 9-12 mm. long, 9-13 mm. wide, wing 2-5 mm. wide, hilium 3-5 mm. long and white, seeds often have low germination. Cotyledons 2, light green, 15-18 mm. long by 3-3.5 mm. wide, apex bluntly acute, stem to 2 mm. thick. Reported as having a medicinal use for rheumatism" (1).Range
