Grass Genera of the World

L. Watson and M. J. Dallwitz

References and sources of data

The references listed here have mostly been used in preparing the generic descriptions, either as sources of descriptive, floristic, nomenclatural, economic or ethnic data, in connection with generic circumscriptions and/or nomenclature, or as sources of background information in relation to preparing the character list. A few have not yet been used directly, but are informative on aspects which merit inclusion in the future. Note that ‘indirect’ descriptive data of the kind involving extrapolation from tribal or subfamily descriptions or deductions from printed keys have not in general been accepted. Some references relevant to software and to agrostological terminology are also included.

The references are annotated with ‘subject areas’, mainly to aid searching via computer editors, but assignment of many of the articles is somewhat arbitrary and some appear under more than one heading.

|A: Sources of comparative anatomical data for the family, or for suites of genera, or of background information on anatomical characters and character states

|C: Classification of the family, phylogeny, classificatory methodology

|G: Chromosomes, breeding systems, hybridization

|H: History of this package

|I: Sources of illustrations

|M: Sources of comparative morphological and/or floristic data for the family, or for large suites of genera

|P: Data sources for comparative biochemistry, physiology, pathogens

|S: Software and relevant background

|T: General taxonomic and descriptive references pertaining to particular genera, or to small series of genera (type descriptions of genera are listed here only when they were found at some stage to yield data directly useful in the present context)

|TE: Morphological and/or anatomical descriptive terminology

Inclusion in generic descriptions of particular taxonomic references does not necessarily mean that these have provided much of the descriptive data. Nomenclatural inconsistencies between genera described here and the references pertaining to them result from taxonomic realignments. Many of the works listed are largely or in part compilations, which themselves list primary data sources. The latter are given here only when they have been consulted directly.
