Habit, vegetative morphology. Perennial (large bushes). Culms woody and persistent; scandent, or not scandent; branched above. Rhizomes pachymorph. Leaves not basally aggregated. Leaf blades pseudopetiolate; disarticulating from the sheaths.
Reproductive organization. Plants bisexual, with bisexual spikelets; with hermaphrodite florets.
Inflorescence. Inflorescence indeterminate (presumably?); with pseudospikelets (presumably?); paniculate (dense, oblong). Spikelet-bearing axes persistent. Spikelets not secund; pedicellate.
Female-fertile spikelets. Rachilla prolonged beyond the uppermost female-fertile floret (?).
Glumes present; 34; awnless (mucronate); similar.
Female-fertile florets 1. Lemmas twisted; similar in texture to the glumes; not becoming indurated; mucronate to awned (or almost awned). Palea absent. Lodicules absent (or very small). Stamens 6; monadelphous. Ovary with a conspicuous apical appendage. The appendage long, stiff and tapering. Styles fused (into one prolonged style). Stigmas 3.
Fruit, embryo and seedling. Pericarp thick and hard; free (the fruit a nut).
Taxonomy. Bambusoideae; Bambusodae; Bambuseae.
Distribution, ecology, phytogeography. 4 species; Southeast Asia.
Paleotropical. Indomalesian. Indo-Chinese.
