  • XVII. D. Some Major Steps in the Development of Tetrapyrrole-Dependent Photobiotechnologies

In this historical section, emphasis is placed on the development of tetrapyrrole-dependent photobiotechnologies.
    1. 1961: Lipson et al, synthesized hematoporphyrin derivative (HPD), the first practical photodynamic therapy drug used in the treatment of cancer.
    2. 1984: Rebeiz et al, described the concept and phenomenology of tetrapyrrole-dependent photodynamic herbicides.
    3. 1986: Pottier et al, used delta-aminolevulinic acid (ALA)-induced protoprphyrin in the treatment of cancerous tumors.
    4. 1988: Rebeiz et al, described the concept and phenomenology of tetrapyrrole-dependent photodynamic insecticides.
    5. 1989: Matringe et al, demonstrated the inhibition of protoporphyrinogen IX oxidase by diphenyl ether herbicides.
